Purpose & perspective · A personal reflection

Begin with your why

A personally meaningful reason gives direction to the next practical step.

Make the reason your own.

Knowing that something is good for us does not always make it meaningful enough to practise. The reason has to become personal.

Perhaps you want to travel with your spouse, remain involved in your family, continue meaningful work or preserve the freedom to make your own choices. The question is not what someone else’s ideal life looks like. It is what you hope to keep participating in.

“Do not begin only by asking, “Which exercise should I do?” Begin by asking, “Why do I want to remain capable?””

Let inspiration become your own reason.

An inspiring person, a film or a visible transformation can provide a spark. I have also seen that borrowed enthusiasm fade when the excitement passes or results take longer than expected.

A deeper reason can remain a point of reference. When motivation becomes weak, our values and responsibilities can help us choose the next constructive action.

Let the how fit your life.

People differ in their history, preferences, ability and circumstances. The form of movement, the routine and the support they need will differ too.

The long-term question is which appropriate practices can remain part of your life. Begin with a clear reason, then choose a practical next step that respects your present reality.

FROM REFLECTION TO ACTION

Take it into your week.

  1. Name something you want to keep participating in.

  2. Write down why it matters to you.

  3. Choose one appropriate step or conversation that supports it.
